Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts Civil Services Examination every year to select the candidates for various vacancies in various departments. This year the notification has been hosted on its website as usual. Candidates who are looking for Civil Services Exam can apply for the test. All applicants have to know UPSC IAS Syllabus for both Preliminary and Main Examination. Here on this page we are describing both syllabus and exam pattern clearly. Candidates who wish know the complete details regarding the test may go through the following.

UPSC is going to conduct the IAS Examination to select capable applicants for various posts. Authority will hold this exam in two stages i.e.,

  • Preliminary Examination
  • Main Examination
  • Personal Interview

Firstly all applicants need to appear for Preliminary Test and those who qualified in prelims will be called for mains and interview as well. Cutoff marks for both tests will be decided by the authority only. Candidates should know UPSC IAS Preliminary and Main Exam pattern as well as syllabus to prepare for the tests accordingly. Main Exam comprises both written and interview rounds.

UPSC Civil Services Preliminary Exam Pattern 2016 Syllabus

Preliminary exam consists of two papers of objective type multiple choice based questions. The maximum marks of 400 will be carried for prelims. Question paper will be set into both languages Hindi and English.

Paper I:

This paper will be held on morning session with questions on General Studies. Totally 100 questions will be asked for 200 marks i.e., 2 marks for each question. This paper will also be available in both languages Hindi and English. Candidates are required to score minimum marks in this test to get eligible for main examination.

Paper II:

This paper will be set into two languages i.e., Hindi and English. This paper will be conducted on afternoon session for 200 marks with 80 questions. Each question carries 2.5 marks. Duration of the test will be 2 hours

Candidates need to choose one correct answer among given four options. There will be a penalty for choosing wrong answer i.e., 1/3rd of marks will be deducted from secured marks.

Applicants have to select only one answer, selecting more than one option is prohibited. If candidates will choose more than one option then that question will be treated as wrong and marks will be deducted.

Syllabus of Paper I – (200 marks) Duration: Two hours

1.Current events of national and international.

2.History of India and Indian National Movement.

3.Indian and World Geography – Physical, Social, Economic geography of India and the World.

4.Indian Polity and Governance-Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy,Rights Issues, etc.

5.Economic and Social Development – Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector Initiatives, etc.

6.General issues on Environmental ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate Change – that do not require subject specialization

7.General Science

Syllabus for Paper II-(200 marks) Duration: Two hours


2.Interpersonal skills including communication skills

3.Logical reasoning and analytical ability

4.Decision making and problem solving ability

5.General mental ability

6.Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude, etc.) (Class X level), Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency etc. – Class X level)

7.English Language Comprehension skills (Class X level).

This test is meant to serve as a screening test, candidates who cleared this test will be declared as qualified for main examination. But the marks obtained in prelims will not be taken into consideration for final selection.

Main examination will be conducted for applicants who cleared their preliminary examination. This main exam will be conducted for a total of 1750 marks. UPSC IAS Mains Exam comprises English, Essay, General Studies, Indian Languages and etc. Aspirants who are preparing for IAS examinations are requested to refer the above syllabus and pattern and prepare accordingly. UPSC IAS Mains Syllabus

Main exam comprises two papers i.e., Paper A and B. Paper A comprises 2 Parts and Paper B contains 7 Parts

Paper A:

Part 1: Any Indian Language

Paper 2: English.
